Toshiba Satellite L755 14P

The Japanese manufacturer, Toshiba, also takes part in the big notebook test 2011 with the Satellite L755-14P. Of course, Notebookcheck takes a closer look at this device, as well. Does the Toshiba Satellite L755-14P, an entry-level 15 incher, perhaps have the makings of a winner?

The Toshiba Satellite L755-14P is currently on the road as a participant of "TestIT2011, Germanys biggest notebook test". The notebook is equipped with a 15.6 inch screen and an Intel Core i5-2410M CPU so that it can be used in both an office environment as well as by consumers.

The processors built-in graphics card is responsible for video output and - as the benchmarks prove - has enough power for the Satellite L755-14Ps screen in many cases. Even a few new games are playable in a still acceptable graphics quality. However, the devices strengths are found in office, Internet and home applications. The Toshiba Satellite L755-14P has a price of about 700 euros.

Specifications Toshiba Satellite L755-14P :
  • Processor : Intel Core i5 2410M 2.3 GHz
  • Memory : 4096 MB, Hynix HMT351S6BFR8C-H9

  • Additional features : Webcam: 0.3 MP, Micosoft Office 10 (Starter), Adobe Photoshop Elements 9, Cyberlink, PowerDVD 10, Cyberlink Powerdirector, Arcsoft Media Converter 7, 24 Months Warranty.
Performance
The Intel Core i5-2410M, which is standardly clocked with 2.3 GHz, belongs to the Sandy Bridge processor generation and can be increased to a clock of 2.9 GHz with Turbo Boost. Overclocking happens automatically and is determined by the required performance in every case. In addition to both CPU core units there is also a 3 MB L3 cache and the incorporated HD Graphics 3000 on the processors die. The front side bus (FSB) work with 1333 MHz in this system.

The CPU initially ran up to 2.9 GHz during the stress test. The maximum frequencies could be reached less frequently, the higher the temperatures climbed. Its great that the CPU doesnt throttle. That means that the CPUs clock didnt fall below 2.3 GHz (all four threads loaded).

CPU Performance
The benchmark results are on the expected level and dont show any outliers. The laptop achieved a score of 3699 points in Cinebench R10s single rendering (32 bit). It was 7946 (32 bit) and 9662 points (64 bit) in multi rendering.

Even the rates in the PCMark series were impressive. The achieved scores are on a par with the opponents in the 3DMark series graphic benchmarks.

GPU Performance
The DirectX 10 capable graphics unit, Intel HD Graphics 3000, is located directly in the Intel Core i5-2410M and shares the level 3, respectively the last level cache with the processor. The graphics performance is a lot better than in the older Intel HD Graphics and is on a par with an entry-level graphics card (for example, the Nvidia GeForce 310M). The Intel HD graphics is also dynamically clocked from 650 to 1200 MHz thanks to Turbo Boost.

The HD Graphics 3000s performance is for example seen in 3DMark 2006, where the Toshiba L755 scores accordingly for the configuration at hand with 3641 points. Intels GMA HD predecessor only achieved about 1000 points in comparison.
Besides the classic office and multimedia tasks (video rendering), the performance even suffices for more demanding tasks, such as simple HD video editing or games in low graphic details.

The installed 2.5 inch Toshiba hard disk reads with 68.4 MB/s in sequential read (HDTune). This rate was confirmed by the second test program, Crystal Disk Mark (63 MB/s). The built-in Toshiba hard disk is on the expected level of a common 5400 rpm memory with these results. However, even faster memory solutions are available. The access rate of only 17 ms (HDTune) has to be noted positively.

Fujitsu Lifebook S761 Notebook Review

The Fujitsu LifeBook S761 is looking for a challenge established business segment, where the majority of ThinkPad notebooks, EliteBooks Latitudes and keep their jobs. We have carefully examined if the Intel Core i7, SSD, USB 3.0 and good mobility are sufficient to alter the established hierarchy.

Fujitsu-level portable portfolio into three categories: Allround, Advanced and Superior. The S761 is LIFEBOOK, CELSIUS-like their devices to the upper class - aimed directly at business users. The attributes of security, reliability and ease of use have a special meaning and are mentioned here as central to the product description. Is the mobility and performance, of course, can not remain on the table is 13 "laptop, of course.

The Fujitsu LifeBook S761 shown as available in stores in three different configurations. All configurations are available with UMTS modules, USB 3.0, Windows 7 Professional and 4 GB of RAM. The differences in the choice of processor, an Intel Core i5-2410M or Intel Core i7-2620m, and the hard disk. Our test model, the current flagship, the Core i7 processor and a disk of 128 GB solid state. The price for which is around 1460 euros, while the cheapest model of the line can be had for around € 1130.

Case
The case of the LIFEBOOK S761 has many similarities with other optical devices of the same class. Cover display and the background black, silver palm rest and keyboard reminiscent of the double white dominant design in the early 1990. All surfaces are opaque and slightly rounded. The wrist is larger and has a positive surface. Although the optics, as always, a matter of taste, if the properties leave less room for discussion.

The base unit is torsional stiffness, the palm rest is solid and the display hinges to the panel in place. The weak points are, however, be above the optical drive and an Express Card slot - an advanced material in these areas must be visibly bent.

Yet flexible screen cover is magnesium, which helps to ensure a low overall weight (the plastic is an option, the characteristics of the Ark, 300 grams heavier). Minimum pressure on the corners, you can create pressure waves on the screen in all four corners. Overall, the entire top and bottom plate can be bent only a little effort, certainly we are used to show strong business-class notebooks in this price region.

Below is a long access panels, behind which are interchangeable components. One of the houses to open the radio module, one of the two slots of RAM and hard disk access. A unique feature found in other notebooks from Fujitsu, is the removable filter that prevents dirt and dust bunnies fall in consumption and cause damage to the intestines.

A replacement filter is not included in the volume of supply, but those who need a new can be done by a Fujitsu dealer for about 40 Euros. While the bottom is fairly stable, the access panels are capable of being easily dented with a slight pressure. The battery, however, is still in your home perfectly fulfilled. We must use the locking mechanism when possible because the battery has a habit of falling out of the box.

Although the strength of the case, especially to see the area, followed by many other business notebooks, makes its shortcomings in the consequences of the use of lighter materials. Competition like HP or Dell Inspiron 2250 ProBook 6360b 2kg be without accessories right on the edge of what can reasonably be done on all days.

The above magnesium lid, 6-cell battery and DVD burner provide LIFEBOOK S761 is a very reasonable 1.67kg. Even the size of 321 mm (length), 228mm (width) and 30 mm (height) do not give the 13-inch portable less. 400g AC adapter can, thanks to the battery intestines be left at home most of the time.

Connectivity
Configuring the device is a test just do not want to fill. 2x USB 2.0, 1 x USB 3.0, VGA, HDMI, Gigabit LAN, card reader (SD, SDHC, SDXC), two separate audio ports (in / out), fingerprint reader, docking ports, and ExpressCard/54 slot for ensure a certain number of connection possibilities. Unfortunately, Firewire and eSATA would still want some users.

Even then, the variety is impressive, even the placement of interface is well designed. Card Reader is available on the front panel, USB connections are very scattered, and along the back of the LAN, AC power and VGA connections. Discomfort might be the HDMI connection (mainly cable) and USB ports, if used in large equipment, such as DVB-T and memory sticks, to prevent another.

Without guilt, we have a good signal quality 1280 x 1024 VGA, USB 3.0 (130.7 MB / sec read speed) and USB 2.0 (32.6 MB / sec read speed), performance and agile enough for the card reader (17.6 MB / sec).

Communication
Wireless interfaces on our test model, like the other models currently available are implemented optimally. Bluetooth 3.0, WiFi 802.11 a / b / g / n and Gobi HSPA module 3000 making multiple connections at home or traveling.

Security
Security comes in many forms of Fujitsu LifeBook. Fingerprint readers, the BIOS password, Trusted Platform Module 1.2 and passwords hard drive in the standard repertoire, which ensures that data is protected against unauthorized access.

Docking port
For the docking port replicator offers Fujitsu (S26391-F655-L100), which is available in the online store for just under 130 euros. Which increases the LIFEBOOK interfaces that are rarely found in notebooks, including the serial and parallel interface as well as eSATA, DVI. Bay substitute can accept an insert in white (to reduce weight) or a removable battery (see Battery) instead of standard optical drive. Module hard drive is not currently available for Fujitsu or third-party accessories.

Guarantee
Warranty for LifeBook, Fujitsu does not seem entirely consistent. Technical information on the product 24 months will be standard on even if the documents included in the package for two-year warranty, bring-in service, the product was purchased from Germany was written.

In any case, should be considered highly cost-effective extended warranty. For example, 3 years of on-site service for 77 euros, or 5 years bring-in is available at 69 euros for their online store. These options, however, must be used within the first 90 days of purchase.

Software
The included software covers an area of the standard Nero Essentials, and Corel Home Office and Corel Draw Essentials. Windows 7 Professional is packed with a DVD inside the package as well as 32 - and 64-bit.

Input Devices

Keyboard
The keyboard offers up to 19 mm in the standard format of regular key, especially keys that are frequently used as profitability, and the tab space is larger than the other to ensure greater accuracy. Even see the other buttons can not complain - the arrow keys are also slightly larger than normal.

We would have liked to see the contrast a bit higher when it comes to labeling of keys, such as lighting conditions less than perfect white markings on the white keys are hard to see.

The keyboard is firmly inserted into the body, but is somewhat flexible in some areas - although this does not adversely affect the comfort or feedback in an important way. This point is well defined and the pole in the middle of writing to please the fans. Voice key action, for a total of quiet, although the use of a slightly larger keyboard is not up to the noise a bit .

Touchpad
The touchpad is deeper than the palm rest and therefore well spaced. Despite a textured surface of the touch screen has good sliding properties and the entries are clear and reliable. The light from the keys on the touchpad are action, quiet operation and is generally excellent.

Although the fingerprint reader between the keys, unfortunately, we had no accidental analysis during the test. The scroll wheel has spread very comfortable and a great alternative to traditional moving surface of the touch screen.

Display
The 13.3 "screen offers a standard aspect ratio of 16:9 and a resolution of 1366x768;. From these data a density of 118dpi, which for most users is balanced in terms of size and space available on your desktop panel has a matte surface and is projected by Fujitsu, reaching a maximum brightness of 200 cd / m². Other types of display, such as those with higher resolutions are not available.

Fujitsu, unlike many other manufacturers, not too many promises on the brightness - in fact, his approach was much more modest. Our measured values with a minimum of nine returned 234 cd / m² at the bottom of the screen and one 271 cd / m² at the top of the screen. The measured average brightness 265 cd / m² and lighting by 85%. The differences in brightness are not detectable with the naked eye when looking at a white and black.

Thank you to the matte surface of the display area provides a bright interior ergonomics - the values of 140 cd / m² to 160 cd / m² is safe enough. 161 cd / m was achieved on our test unit for a brightness value of 6, 114 cd / m² with a value of 5 At a minimum, the panel returned a still usable 18 cd / m² brightness 1, in a work that is dark enough, but not quite dazzling in the least.

For outdoor shows can not simply be bright enough, especially when used in situations of direct sunlight. The average brightness of 265 cd / m² of the LIFEBOOK S761 is sufficient in many situations to provide a clear picture. Also an advantage is that during the operation of the battery screen brightness is not reduced. Strains in direct sunlight backlighting to produce a brighter image than their surroundings, something that is easily remedied by changing the position or find a shady spot to sit in.

The contrast ratio has a positive effect on the readability of the text or viewing photos or video. With a low ratio of 156:1 colors are lazy at best. For a mobile office this is forgivable, but for fans of sharp images and rich video playback, this model leaves a lot to the table. The total amount of reproducible colors is 55% of the sRGB color space, which is relatively small and therefore does not approach the level of other screens are available as standard equipment.

Viewing angle is the stability of a TN panel, so that the expected ranges. You can recognize the content well enough to show horizontal, although the color and brightness differences should be discussed. In the screen turns off vertical or reverse very quickly and at extreme angles quickly becomes unreadable.

Performance
Top LIFEBOOK S761 series model is equipped with the Intel Core i7-2620m processor, 4GB of DDR3 RAM and a Solid State Drive. All this is based on Intel QM67, which has a typical operating characteristics, such as AMT (Active Management Technology), or (Anti-Theft Technology). Discrete graphics module is not available, instead of the processor integrated Intel Graphics HD 3000 is responsible for the video.

Intel Core i7 CPU 2620m is currently the fastest dual-core mobile processor, clocked 2.7 GHz and higher than normal (and lighten the Turbo Boost) in single-threaded applications to 3.4 GHz. Activities that can take advantage of more profit-core hyperthreading technology, which allows four simultaneous threads to execute. As such, the optimal performance of the profile can be implemented depending on the application. We need a complete list of CPU time CPU benchmark row 28, an investment rather strong.

The benchmark results, as expected, were excellent. wPrime 1024m final reaches 496 seconds, the calculation SuperPi 32m in 648 seconds CPU Cinebench R11.5 resulted in 3.04 points and converting MP3 files to AAC format has been done to the speed of 45.7x.

The power loss during battery operation or when the battery is removed (which work only with 80W AC Adapter) has not been determined. The performance of the CPU must be overcome by the quad-core CPU, such as multi-threaded applications are best.

Graphics performance of Intel integrated graphics HD 3000 is suitable for all tasks that are not demanding games and business software such as CAD and 3D Mark Vantage Co. In 1704 it was R11.5 points in Cinebench OpenGL Shading 8.93 points and 2.1 fps reference sky 7.9. Current games are only possible in the resolutions and detail levels dropped substantially reduced and quality.

The potential of the graphics can be raised by installing a second module of RAM, since the properties of two-channel memory controller that supports it. 3D Mark Vantage in 1976 marked the point system by adding a RAM module in heaven and 2.1 seconds a score of 9.1 fps was achieved.

When it comes to a video conversion is also well equipped with Intel Quick Sync. Badaboom converts movies from our test DVD to a format compatible with the iPhone in 681 seconds while the Cyberlink was able to manage the same during the format conversion mk4v friendly MP4 for iPhone 4 in 244 seconds. Compared to the simple conversion based CPU is both an advantage in speed and less stress CPU (see chart).

Regarding the performance of the application you do not have much to worry about thanks to powerful hardware. Photo Editor, Office, Internet, Skype, Flash video in full HD videos and music databases pose no problem. In PC Mark Vantage excellent score 11,556 points were obtained while PC Mark 7 also had a strong presence in 3725 points. With little effort, you can, as already mentioned, the increased performance slightly by adding a second RAM module for the system.

The test model has a solid state drive Toshiba with a capacity of 128 GB. In the other two configurations available today, the only option of the discs 320 or 500 GB drive. Compared to standard discs, Toshiba DSS is clearly faster and reached close to 200 MB / s sequential read speed of 160 MB and GPU / s continuous playback.

Conventional hard drives are slow notable, both here and also with the access speed of 0.2 ms to 17ms, but despite this, the Toshiba model is rather overcome by alternating current with read speeds over 400 MB / s and 0.1ms access time low.

Speak interest on performance, it is recommended that you configure LIFEBOOK S761 in a cheaper way and choose to install a Solid State Drive after purchase. Unlike the Lenovo X220, S761 does not have the same drive height restriction 7mm - good news for people who save a lot of data that the disks of 9.5 mm are currently available with capacities up to 1TB We found it impossible to install a second hard drive in the bay nearby.

Emissions

System noise
We can only hope a noise profile as that of a laptop: when the system is not stressed or use the Fujitsu remains virtually silent. The measurement of 29.8 dB (A) is more representative of the testing environment as the laptop itself.

Unfortunately, the solid fan profile contributes to a red mark on the installation in many work situations. Once the solid state drive, Toshiba is busy, you start to hear a tone. For short periods of access, it is very annoying, but when it comes to data transfer itself can start getting on the nerves like the sound of high frequency and therefore uncomfortable.

The fan bases of operations in the stress level of the system and occurs between 33.1 dB (A) and 43.1 dB (A) at full load. Under the high demand for air is forced out of the box in a manner similar to the turbine, unlike some of the features seen so far quiet fan.

This is not a specific problem, but just different from what we normally have seen. The optical drive is relatively more reserved, reaching a maximum of 36.1 dB (A).

Temperature
Fujitsu model cooling system test was more than convincing in its operation. Less than a laptop is very quiet minimal stress and performance required for a user, effectively remove warm air from the case. That this process is efficient enough to prevent heat build-up indicates the beginning of low temperatures.

With a maximum of 34.4 ° C, light conditions and a maximum of 40.9 at full speed (measured leaving the body), there is nothing to complain about. A comfortable couch-surfing is possible as long as the conversion tasks of the desk.

Speakers
Two speakers mounted strip above the keyboard can sound better than what is used in a notebook. Despite this, the properties of sound are sharp and well-rounded not suitable for a multimedia experience. A separate heaphones, Bluetooth or USB speakers will bring better performance to the table. We had a separate audio ports, which allowed us to use the headset with the jack connections.

Battery life
The 6-cell battery in our test model has a capacity of 67 Wh and therefore a solid basis for a good battery life. The specification Fujitsu also offers a 6-cell 63 W version, which has not yet been tested in Germany. Moreover, there is a secondary 27 Wh battery, which can be mounted in the expansion bay instead of the optical drive (S26391-F954-L500) at a price of around 130 euros.

On the network side of things, we measured the power consumption of 7.7 watts to 60 watts under full load. Thank you to the powerful 80-watt adapter we do not know all the processors in sync-demanding tasks.

Standards for energy saving profile may change our test model, so it was not possible to set the critical value of the battery below 11%. On the other hand, had a special pre-defined profiles in the test model, so in theory you can run the battery to 0%.

When voting, the device selects the standard profiles, as there seems to be that which best represents potential buyers will find their machines after purchase. As our tests have been completed 11% of the reserve capacity of the battery instead of the usual 3%.

In the battery test Eater Reader (minimum brightness of 18 cd / m²), modules of all radio waves in power saving mode) in collaboration with Fujitsu power saving mode (turns some components) was LIFEBOOK S761 capable of going 563 minutes without needing to be plugged in.

With a special profile power saving mode and a reserve capacity of 0%, 675 minutes is possible. With a little tweaking, the runtime for normal users also see some benefits. Under WLAN test (maximum brightness, energy saving profile) battery managed 402 minutes, while DVDs have been played for 355 minutes before the battery failed.

Battery Eater Classic test (high performance profile, all wireless radios on the maximum brightness), the wind had risen from their sails after only 70 minutes. In short, you can expect to have good endurance S761 battery suitable for a variety of scenarios, far from the grid.

Verdict
LIFEBOOK S761 is a lightweight and durable 13.3 "laptop that can fall back on to be well prepared. Interfaces, expansion options and accessories are high quality and has nothing to fear from the competition. To this end, we can find an option removable expansion bay battery and support very much focused on value.

The low weight of the laptop has its Achilles heel chassis rigidity that results, including the weakest point is the flexible display. Take a good laptop bag quilted into account when they buy something because it would correct the problems that the lightweight construction materials.

Duality is the same for the display. While we liked the overall brightness and matte surface, stability angle and contrast ratio shows room for improvement. Suitable for fans of office and other business tasks, but media will not be happy.

Other critical issues such as solid state drive makes a sound or wet performance because system RAM can not be solved by changes in the post-purchase or selection of a completely different.

Sony changes PSN terms to block class action lawsuits

sony, psn, lawsuit, class action

This is interesting. In a mandatory PlayStation 3 update, Sony has slipped a change to the terms of service for the PlayStation Network so that users who accept it are basically giving up the right to take part in a class-action lawsuit against them. The new clauses, termed "Binding Individual Arbitration," mandate that any Dispute Resolution Proceedings, whether in arbitration or court, will be conducted on an individual basis only.
Any outstanding class action lawsuits filed against Sony will still stand, including the class action suit filed in April over the PSN security breach. But it seems Sony is protecting itself against further litigation should it be hacked again in the future -- or perhaps if it pull another rootkit fiasco. They are in their legal right to do so, according to some analysts, but the stealthy move cant help their already tainted image in the minds of customers.

Although this could hurt consumers chances to challenge the company in court in case of any wrongdoing, theres nothing in the terms of service preventing people from suing Sony on an individual basis.
Looking at it from another perspective, as Gamasutra notes, class action suits in the gaming world usually benefit a few (read: lawyers) while members of the class have to make do with the crumbles (i.e. The Hot Coffee class action suit against Take-Two, which netted its members a replacement game disc or from $5 to $35 in cash).
In any case, users can also opt-out of the binding arbitration and class action waiver by contacting Sony in writing within 30 days of agreeing to the new terms. The full list of changes to the agreement is available here (PDF). Its worth noting that PSN users are required to agree to the new terms upon signing in to be able to use the service.

Sony VAIO F

The Sony VAIO F is a high-end multimedia notebook. Our powerhouse test unit features an Intel Core i7 quad-core processor and Nvidia GT 425M graphics card. Whats wrong with it? Read our review.

Our Sony VAIO F (VPCF136FM) review unit has the following specifications:

* 16-inch 900p (1600 x 900) glossy display with LED backlighting
* Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
* Intel Core i7-740QM quad-core processor (1.73GHz~2.93GHz Turbo Boost, 6MB L3, 2.5GT/s QPI, 45W TDP)
* Intel PM55 chipset
* Nvidia GeForce GT 425 1GB graphics
* 6GB DDR3-1333 dual-channel RAM (1x 4GB, 1x 2GB)
* 640GB 5400RPM Toshiba hard drive (MK6465GSXN)
* Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6250 AGN wireless LAN
* Internal Bluetooth
* Blu-ray reader (PIONEER BD-ROM BDC-TD03)
* Internal backlit keyboard w/ separate numeric keypad
* Weight: 7.07 lbs.
* Dimensions: 15.69 x 1.34~1.79 x 10.69 inches
* MSRP: $1,299 (starting price: $869)

The specifications definitely place our VAIO F in the upper percentile in terms of performance vs. most 15.6/16/17.3-inch notebooks on the market. The GT 425M graphics card has more than enough power for the latest games. The only exception to the rule is the rather pokey 5400RPM hard drive; a 7200RPM model should be standard on a performance-oriented notebook.

Build and Design
The VAIO F has a run-of-the-mill look; the only notable physical features are the backlit keyboard and the green power button on the right side of the notebook. The F is constructed of all plastic and doesnt pretend otherwise. An all-plastic construction is not necessarily a bad thing, however; the VAIO F feels quite sturdy if a bit hollow. Gripping the chassis by the corners and twisting produces minimal movement in the chassis, which is what I like to see; this prevents the internal circuit boards from bending.

The display flexes easily when twisted by the corners. No ripples appear on the screen when pressure is applied from the back, which indicates there is a decent amount of protection. There are a number of buttons above the keyboard area; my favorite is the “Display Off” button, which turns off and on the display instantly. The VAIO F is missing volume control buttons, which is strange given the multimedia focus of this machine.

Those looking to upgrade the VAIO F will find it relatively easy to do; there are separate compartments on the bottom for the RAM and hard drive. Both RAM slots are occupied in our test notebook.

Acer Aspire Timeline X 1830T

If you want a laptop because of its convenient size and long battery life, but the need for better multitasking and video of a cheap netbook Acer Aspire 1830T offers so the laptop can be perfect for you. Read on to see what this offer of $ 900 ultra portable.

 Design and build

Acer Aspire Timeline X-Series is the latest generation of thin and light notebooks from Acer designed to deliver a solid performance and long battery life in a surprisingly light package. At first glance, it is easy to confuse one for the Aspire 1830T dozens of Acer netbooks, have proved in recent years. Looks, however, can deceive.

Acer Aspire Timeline X 1830T
Acer Aspire Timeline X 1830T
Build quality is quite good despite the small size of this laptop. The combination of matte black plastic and relatively thick brushed aluminum palmrests leave the laptop feels solid and shows almost no signs of flexibility. The screen is closed with a good amount of excitation of the display hinges when closed. Protection against the screen lid is adequate cover folds easily and distortions appear on the screen when applying pressure on the back cover. The opening of the screen, you can tell the hinges should stop for a long period of high tension that prevents the screen from flopping around after it opened. The body of the laptop seems to be well designed with minimal chassis flex and no obvious cracks from plastic.

One area of design for me was a laptop on the bottom. Expansion bay offers access to the hard drive, WiFi, optional WWAN card slots and two RAM sockets. One of the cover plate is supported by five screws (my only complaint), then you should spend a minute or two to lose all the screws before you can replace the hard drive or add more memory. That said, I am always happy to see when the producers make it easy for owners to update the memory books.

Lenovo Idea Pad S12 Review

The Lenovo IdeaPad S12 features a 12-inch screen and is one of the largest netbooks on the market. This 3.42-lb machine is designed to let consumers easily surf the Internet and perform other light tasks on-the-go without having to spend a lot of money. The S12 comes pre-loaded with Windows XP, has a full-size keyboard, and includes a six-cell battery for five hours of run time – read on to see how it fared in our testing.

Our Lenovo IdeaPad S12 review unit has the following specifications:

  • Intel Atom N270 processor (1.60GHz)
  • Windows XP Home Edition
  • Intel GMA 950 integrated graphics
  • 1GB RAM
  • 12.1-inch widescreen display (1280x800) with LED backlighting
  • 160GB 5400RPM hard drive (Hitachi HTS543216L9A)
  • 6-cell Li-ion battery (11.1V, 52Wh)
  • Broadcom 802.11b/g wireless
  • One-year limited warranty
  • White color (also available in black)
  • Dimensions: 11.5 x 8.5 x 0.9 – 1.4 inches (W x D x H)
  • Weight: Starting at 3.42 lb w/ 6-cell battery

As configured, our S12 is currently priced at $499. The base model starts at $449 with a VIA Nano 1.3GHz processor.

Build and Design
Since all netbooks have nearly identical specifications, manufacturers have to look at the design and build quality to differentiate themselves. Lenovos IdeaPad S12 is a docile and friendly-looking machine with a not a square edge in sight. The companys second generation of netbooks feature rounded edges and a slimmer chassis. The S12 looks well built; all of the parts fit together neatly.

The back of the lid has a "fashion" design with hundreds of little circles dotting the lid. The S12 would be at home in a Target store because I think all of those little circles resemble the companys bullseye logo. In addition, the majority of people I showed it to thought it was a girls machine, probably because it is white and has that circle design on the lid. Your mileage may vary – I suggest guys go with the black version.

The S12 is constructed of ABS plastic through and through. It looks and feels sturdy and is not fragile at all. The only part of the notebook that could be more solid is the battery, which wobbles ever so slightly. There is little flex anywhere on the machine, with the exception to this being the lid; ripples show on the screen when only mild pressure is put on the back of the screen. This should be a non-issue as long as the machine is not thrown around. The hinges that hold the display on are very solid as well. A point of interest about the lid is that it only tilts back about 20 degrees past vertical; given how light this machine is, it will likely be used in a variety of situations and therefore should probably tilt back another 10-20 degrees or so.

The entire base of the notebook has a matte finish, while the lid is glossy plastic front and back. The glossy plastic is surprisingly durable; I did not use a sleeve to protect the S12 in my bag during the week I had it and there were no scratches at the end of the review period.

The glossy screen attracts dust and fingerprints easily, so keep a microfiber cloth handy. As far as cleanliness goes, the white plastic stayed clean during the time I had it; only time will tell how it fares in the long term. Hopefully the plastic is not too absorbent and will not pick up stains and other discolorations. The black S12 is be better at hiding everyday wear and tear.

Compared to the Dell Inspiron Mini 12, a direct competitor to the Lenovo S12, the S12 is slightly smaller (albeit about a tenth of an inch thicker). The S12 feels deceptively heavy in the hands depending on how you pick it up (by the back, front, and so on). The stick-out 6-cell battery is the primary reason the S12 feels weighty.

Overall, the S12 has excellent fit and finish with an accommodating design.

Screen and Speakers
The S12 has a 12-inch widescreen display (16:10 aspect ratio) with a 1280x800 resolution and LED backlighting. Contrast and brightness are excellent; the LEDs lighting the display (instead of the traditional CCFL lighting used in most notebooks) make for a very even brightness distribution, with only a hint of bleed at the bottom. There are ten levels of brightness; I found level 7 or 8/10 to be the sweet spot, but dimming the screen to 4 or 5/10 are perfectly usable and will extend battery life. The top brightness level is almost too bright. Viewing angles are average at best – from above the picture washes out quickly, and from below it darkens. Side-to-side angles are better but there is noticeable color shift.

Unfortunately the glossy screen coating means a lot of reflections, so using this machine outside or areas with a lot of lighting sources could get annoying.

The 1280x800 resolution of the display is excellent for a netbook; most have 1024x600 or less. The display also has a 16:10 aspect ratio, which is unusual since most manufacturers are moving to 16:9 displays. The higher resolution makes the S12 feel more like a full computer than other netbooks with lower resolutions.

There are two speakers located beneath the palm rests on the S12. These are essentially stereotypical notebook speakers – they get loud enough to hear sounds and are reasonably clear but for situations where audio matters, like movies and music, do make use of the headphone jack.

Speaking of the headphone jack, it is unfortunate that some background hiss is present. It is easily drowned out with audio and most people probably will not even notice it, but to a headphone audiophile like myself, it is disappointing.

Keyboard and Touchpad
The IdeaPad S12s keyboard is, in a word, superb; it is full-size and requires no adjusting from a standard notebook keyboard. There is no flex and key travel is just right. The keyboard feels of high quality and allows for precision typing; each key is anchored securely and does not wobble at all. It has excellent tactile feedback and enough resistance that you can rest your hands on the keyboard in typing position without pressing keys accidentally. Lenovo designers made good use of the keyboard real estate – I am pleased to see the PrintScreen key is its own key and not mapped as a secondary function (as in, needing to press the [Fn] key in conjunction with the corresponding key to use it), and that the PgUp and PgDn keys are near the arrow keys. The Home and End keys are secondary function keys, but looking at the space the designers had to deal with, it was clearly not an option to make them separate as well.

All in all, this is one of the best netbook/notebook keyboards I have used in a long time.

The touchpad has its ups and downs. While tracking is easy and it is reasonably accurate, it is a bit too small – I found myself running out of room often. If it measured a half-centimeter more in diameter, it would be perfect. The touchpad buttons provide good feedback and make an audible but not annoying click when depressed. The buttons are easy to find by feel and other than wishing they were slightly larger, I have no complaints about them.

Ports and Features
The IdeaPad S12 has a limited selection of ports – lets take a picture tour. All descriptions are left to right.

Left Side: Power jack, exhaust vent, wireless on/off switch, two USB, media card reader (MMC/MS/MS Pro/SD)

Right Side: ExpressCard/34 slot, headphone and microphone jacks, USB, VGA out, 10/100 Ethernet, Kensington Lock slot

Front: Stereo speakers

Back: Battery

The S12 has the essentials; given what a netbook is designed to do, the port selection is difficult to complain about.

Performance
I used the S12 more or less as my primary computer for one week and I quickly found out what a netbook is good for and what it is not good for. Its Internet surfing performance is reasonable, as is its performance in most everyday activities such as playing music and reading email. OpenOffice.org ran without any hitches. I was able to use Firefox and listen to iTunes simultaneously without trouble.

That said, doing anything more strenuous than surfing the Internet can quickly overwhelm the Intel Atom processor. Despite its Hyper-Threading technology, which makes Windows think it has two cores, the Intel Atom is still a single-core processor and a very limited one at that, and therefore multitasking with several programs is not going to be smooth. Alt-tabbing between applications is not instant. In everyday performance, users coming from faster computers will notice programs take longer to open, web pages take longer to render, and in general performance is toned down a notch. Going through ten megapixel images and trying to watch high-res movies from my video camera were clearly too much for it to handle. Know the limits of a netbook before you buy one.

Overall, the S12 is what a netbook is supposed to be – a more portable compliment to a users primary computer. I found the S12 to be a great companion at work – I used it to listen to music and keep a web browser with my email open. For everyday tasks, the performance is just fine.

All netbooks generally have the same specifications and therefore will have nearly identical performance. Nonetheless, we run a full set of benchmarks for each netbook reviewed.

HDTune for the hard drive performance:

Heat and Noise
The S12 has one small cooling fan which gently pushes lukewarm air out of an exhaust vent on the left side of the machine. The fan is on the majority of the time while in use. The fan is nearly silent – I had trouble hearing it when there was any background noise.

The surface of the S12 does not get warm at all – there are no noticeable hotspots on the bottom or top of the machine. The S12 is a very good choice for those wanting a quiet and cool machine.

Battery Life
At half brightness (5/10) while typing this review and surfing the Internet, the S12 managed five hours of battery life. Lenovo includes a custom power configuration utility with the S12, from which I used the second-most power conscious setting, Low Power. Lenovo claims the S12 can go for six hours, which I suppose could be reached using the Super Energy Saver profile, but it sets the screen brightness down to near zero and barely anything is visible on the screen. Under normal use, expect the S12 to be usable for at least four and a half hours. With a power-saving SSD instead of a mechanical hard drive, I imagine the battery life would be a bit longer.

Conclusion
The IdeaPad S12 is excellence in a small form factor at a low price. The overall design is very pleasing to the eyes and it has the best netbook keyboard I have used to date. Build quality is solid and the screen is beautiful. There is little complain about on the S12 – sure, the touchpad could be a bit larger and the screen could tilt back further, but other than that, if you are in the market for a netbook with a larger screen, it is difficult to go wrong with the Lenovo IdeaPad S12.

Pros:

  • Pleasing design
  • Solid build quality
  • Excellent keyboard and screen
  • Five hours of battery life

Cons:

  • Touchpad could be a bit larger
  • Screen could tilt back further
  • Back of the lid could use a bit more protection

When I first started at Corsair back in 2007 we had recently got into the PSU business, and we were still primarily known as a memory company specializing in overclocking and enthusiast grade components. Since then, we have successfully launched many more product lines designed specifically for the enthusiast PC builder. Air Series™ fans are the latest addition to the Corsair lineup of products. We currently sell many products that already come with fans, so it was a logical next step to manufacture our own fans which would meet our own specific needs, as well as the needs of hardware enthusiasts everywhere.

When we decided we wanted to make our own fans, we knew that we wanted to start from scratch rather than using someone elses design, and to do this we would need a fan test rig that could accurately measure static pressure and CFM (Cubic Feet Per Minute) at variable RPM. The test rig we went with is a LW-9266 Fan PQ Performance Measurement Apparatus made by LongWin and it fit the bill perfectly. We began testing different fan blade designs as well as other manufacturers fans to see if we could find out what made a great fan better than an average one. It wasnt long before we realized something surprising; many of the fans we tested did not even meet their own listed specifications!

Obviously, the primary job of a case fan is to move air, but there are actually different situations a fan might find itself in, so there is no single fan design which will be the best for every application. In some cases you will have a fan pushing air through another object; a good example of this is with our Hydro Series CPU coolers where you have a fan pushing air through a radiator, or any number of CPU air coolers that have a fan pushing air through a heat-sink. In this situation static pressure is going to be more important than pure CFM. When it comes to your standard case fan which has limited obstructions to worry about, a fan that can move air at a high CFM is ideal. In addition to performance we also wanted to take into account the noise level of the fans. Knowing this from the beginning we set out to create a full range of fans that would be able to meet the demands of any system. We feel that we have answered these demands with our new launch of AF (Airflow) and SP (Static Pressure) case fans, which both come with a Quiet Edition variant.

The Air Series Airflow fans consist of three different models: AF120 Quiet Edition, AF120 Performance Edition, AF140 Quiet Edition.

The Airflow Series fans use a thinner nine blade fan design (11 blades on the AF140) and as their names suggest are available in both 120mm and 140mm variants. The Quiet Edition is tuned to run at a lower RPM than the Performance Edition at the cost of a lower CFM rating. To compare the two, the AF120 QE is rated for 21dBa at 1100RPM pushing 39.88 CFM, while the AF120 PE is rated for 30dBA at 1650RPM pushing 63.47 CFM, so you can decide yourself if performance or silence is the more important factor for your system. The AF140 QE is the only 140mm fan we are initially launching. Typically people searching for a 140mm fan are more interested in silence than all out CFM, since larger fans can spin more slowly while still providing excellent airflow. The AF140 QE is rated for 24Dba at 1150RPM and is rated at 67.8 CFM.

When it comes to Air Series Static Pressure fans we have two different models: SP120 Quiet Edition, SP120 Performance Edition.

You will notice a difference in the fan blade design when compared with the Airflow Series. The SP series has seven fan blades that are much thicker than those on the AF series. These are the type of fans you will want to use if you are trying to force air through another object such as a radiator or heat sink, or even if you have a fan that is pushing air through your HDD cage. Just like the AF series the SP series has both a Performance and Quiet Edition, with the Quiet Edition rated for 23dBA at 1450RPM pushing 37.85 CFM, and the Performance Edition rated for 35dBA at 2350RPM pushing 62.74 CFM.

In addition to getting a fan with excellent performance, we have built our fans with rubber mounting inserts in each corner to reduce noise and vibration once the fan is mounted in your system. You will also get three colored rings with each fan (white, red, blue) so you can customize the look of your fans to match the accents of your system. You can also remove the rings if you want the stock black look.

With Corsairs new line of system fans, you can be assured that the performance numbers printed on the box are backed up by real world test results. We have specifically designed our fans for specific purposes and because of this you are able to fine tune your systems cooling. Whether you want maximum performance or low noise there is a Corsair fan that is perfect for your system. We have also paid attention to the little things, such as colored rings and high quality rubberized fan mounts to suppress vibrational noise. Corsair fans will give you the extra edge when it comes to performance, as well as giving your system a custom look not seen anywhere else.
